Common Warehouse Racking Terms

Anchors
Used to secure pallet rack columns to the floor.
AKA: Floor Bolts, Lags, Wedge Anchors, Concrete Anchors, Strike Anchors

Back-to-Back Racking
A standard racking system composed of two consecutive back-facing rows.

Base Plate
A plate welded to the foot of a rack upright or repair unit distributing the weight of the rack to the floor and anchoring it.
AKA: Footplate

Bay
A unit of pallet rack that consists of two uprights with beams in between.
AKA: Unit, Section

Beam
A horizontal bar installed into slots in the upright that holds up the pallets.
AKA: Rail, Horizontal, Cross Member, Stick

Beam Connector
A formed, stamped or punched metal part that can be clipped or bolted to the upright, facilitating the safe fastening of the support beam to the upright frame.
AKA: Beam Clip, Beam Bracket, End Plate, Ears

Beam Deflection
The curvature of a supporting beam when loaded.

Brace
Diagonal or horizontal members bolted or welded between frame columns in a specific pattern to form an upright. Helps to resist cross-aisle forces imposed on the rack’s frames and improves the stability of the racking system.
AKA: Rack Brace

Cantilevered Rack
A racking structure ideally suited for long or oddly shaped products such as lumber, piping, or tubing.

Column
The vertical component of a racking system, on which horizontal and diagonal braces are welded and beams are attached.
AKA: Upright Column

Column Protectors
A product that blocks the upright from getting hit and damaged by forklifts.
AKA: Rack Protector, Post Protector, Boots, Protector, Guard

Cross Aisle Tie
A horizontal component used to connect the top of two opposing rack frames to provide stability in the cross-aisle direction.
AKA: Over Aisle Tie, Top Tie

Drive-In Rack
A racking system that allows a lift truck to travel deep into the rack for placement and retrieval of loads.

Drive-Thru Rack
A racking system that allows forklifts to drive through the rack and for pallet loads to be accessible from both ends or aisles.

Dynamic Rack
An inclined racking system that involves rollers and allows palletized loads to slide through the system.

Fixed Rack
A rack with which the palletized load is loaded from the front. Includes single-deep, double-deep and stack systems.

Flue Space
A clearance within a racking system that allows fire and heat to vent vertically and horizontally.

Gravity Rack
Pallet flow racks and push-back racks are gravity flow systems that rely on gravity to move palletized loads within the rack structure on inclined rails.

Mobile Rack
Often motorized compact racks set-up on rail systems that allow the movement of entire rows.

Offset Backstop Beam
A beam installed to prevent a pallet from falling off the back of the rack.
AKA: Load Stop, Back Stop, Pallet Stop

Pallet
A flat structure used as a base for the storage of goods in the supply chain.

Pallet Flow Rack
A racking system that uses gravity. Much like a conveyor system, pallet-flow lanes are installed on a slight angle to allow the storage of multiple pallets per level.

Pallet Rack Drop Pin
A component that keeps pallet rack beams engaged in the upright frame column when the integral locking device has been lost or damaged.
AKA: Safety Clip, J Bolt, Beam Clips, Pallet Rack Clips, Gravity Pin

Pallet Support Bars
Steel components perpendicular to the load-supporting beams that supports a loaded pallet’s weight in cases where the pallet cannot be placed directly onto a pair of beams.

Palletized Unit Load
One or more items secured to a pallet or skid to be handled and stored as a single unit.

Push Back Rack
A racking system using horizontal lanes installed on a slight angle permitting deep pallet storage. Loading and unloading is done at one end, from the same service aisle. As pallets are loaded, they push the other pallets backwards on the same row.

Rack Guard Ends
Barriers used to protect the rack uprights from being hit by forklift traffic.
AKA: End Protectors, Post Protectors, Upright Protectors, Guard Rail

Roll-Formed Pallet Rack
A standard type of rack made of thin steel and cold-formed with holes punched through, deriving its strength from the shape.

Row Spacer
A component used for the spacing of back-to-back pallet racks that provides added stability and maintains even spacing between the racks.
AKA: Back to Back Spacer

Safety Pin
A small device or mechanical fastener installed on the beam connector.
AKA: Shear Pin, Screw Bolt

Upright
Two posts and bracing that stand vertically and attach to the beams and floor.
AKA: Frame, Vertical, Standard, Column, Mono Post

Wire Decks
Pallet supports that sit between the beams made of steel bars and steel wire.
AKA: Grids, Grates, Wire Rack, Baskets

Wall Tie
Used to help secure a single row of pallet racking against a wall.
AKA: Row to Wall Spacer, Brackets
